Monday, July 10 – Manchester Ship Canal

Tonight being ideal for cycling brought us out of doors, and at 4.15pm we were on the road towards Barton Bridge. We passed through Walkden and along to Worsley. Hugging the tramlines we reached the Unicorn Hotel, where we turned right along Liverpool road. This road is being widened to cope with all the extra traffic, and it is to be hoped that the whole of the surface will be repaired also.

Through Irlam to Warburton Bridge, from the top of which we had an unrestricted view of the surrounding country. To the south, Bowden and Altrincham, east the Ship Canal was like a thread winding through Irlam to Barton, northeast, the rising ground around Swinton, north the moorlands behind Bolton, showing a smoky haze from the town. To the west stretched Warrington and Lymm Church. Changing our route we came to Glazebrook, Glazebury, Leigh, then uphill to Bolton arriving home about 9.45pm.
